Causes and Risk Factors of Depression

The causes of depression are usually biological or circumstantial. In most cases, it’s the result of chemical imbalances in the brain, changes in female hormone levels, and a family history of depression or a different mood disorder.

Depression may also occur because of early trauma in childhood, substance abuse, and medical conditions like chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease, insomnia, and heart attack. In addition, depression is more common in females than males.
